HerKind Turns 4: What 4 Years of Community Taught Me About Power
Four years ago, I started HerKind because I was lonely.
I had just moved to a new city. I was building a business. And I was coaching high-achieving women who were often "the only one" in their workplaces.
I kept hearing the same thing: "Maybe I'm the problem."
But the data tells a different story.
Black women are more likely to be "Onlys" in corporate environments, which increases burnout and attrition.
Workplace isolation is directly correlated with higher stress hormones and lower job satisfaction.
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, loneliness carries health risks comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Harvard's 80+ year longitudinal study on adult development found that the strongest predictor of long-term health and life satisfaction isn't income, status, or achievement — it's quality relationships.
Let that sink in.
Not productivity.
Not prestige.
Relationships.
What I was witnessing in my coaching practice wasn't individual fragility.
It was systemic isolation.
So I built a room.
Not a grand strategy. Just proximity. Conversation. Shared time.
What I didn't understand then — but deeply understand now — is this:
In a post-pandemic, AI-first world, community is infrastructure.
Here are 4 lessons I've learned after 4 years of building one:
1. Community is a nervous system regulation
Research shows that social connection lowers cortisol, reduces inflammation, and improves immune function. Safety isn't just emotional — it's biological.
2. Community protects against burnout
Gallup data shows employees with strong workplace relationships are more engaged, more productive, and less likely to leave. Isolation accelerates exhaustion. Belonging sustains effort.
3. Community is economic acceleration
Over 70% of jobs are filled through networking. Access isn't random — it's relational. Rooms collapse timelines.
4. Community reframes identity
When women gather, they externalize what they used to internalize. What felt like "I'm not enough" becomes "This system wasn't built with me in mind."
That shift changes careers. Health. Wealth trajectories.
Belonging Isn't Soft. It's Strategic.
HerKind started because I didn't want to feel alone in a new city.
Four years later, I understand something bigger:
Belonging isn't soft. It's strategic.
And for Black women especially — who face higher workplace isolation and stress load — curated, psychologically safe spaces are not indulgent.
They are protective.
They are preventative health.
They are an economic strategy.
They are legacy work.
Four years in — and we're just getting started.
